Do I Need Wedding Insurance?

In a nutshell, yes...

Wedding insurance is an optional policy that gives you protection and peace of mind if anything was to go wrong with your wedding planning, such as a problem with a venue or supplier or even a key member of the wedding party becoming ill.

You can choose whether your insurance covers you in the lead up to your wedding, on the wedding day or both.

Typical things that are covered are:

  • A venue going bust or cancelling

This is usually covered under 'cancellation cover' which means if the wedding is off you would be compensated in cash to allow you to plan a wedding of a similar value.

  • A supplier letting you down

This is if you do not receive an item or service which is pre-booked and would generally cover photography services, florist, suit hire. or if an item is damaged. This will cover deposits. you have paid out and any other costs you have incurred. Make sure you have a written agreement or contract with all of your suppliers.

  • You cancel because key people can't make it due to illness, jury service, accident or death

This applies to close family, the wedding party (bride, groom, bridesmaids, best-man) Most insurers will cover if the illness or death was not caused by a pre-existing condition but all insurers have different policies on this so please read your policy carefully.

  • Lost, stolen or accidentally damaged wedding rings, flowers, cake, outfits and gifts.

Cake and flowers are usually covered up until the start of the wedding reception. Wedding bands are typically covered before the wedding and up until 24 hours after the wedding. Engagement rings are usually excluded from policies.

**Please double check what your specific insurance covers, the advice above is just that, my advice and I cannot be held accountable for any policies you choose to take out.
